Earlier tonight, in Butler, PA, during a Trump Rally, a shooting incident left two people dead, including the shooter, and injured former president Donald Trump.
Although the news of this shooting, and possible assassination attempt is shocking to most, the fact that another shooting has occurred in America comes as no surprise to anyone. We cannot and should not ignore this type of violence.
Jeremy Stein, Executive Director of States United stated, “We must condemn all forms of gun violence. This is just another example of how the Second Amendment has infringed upon Americans’ freedom to exercise their First Amendment right and the democratic process. Political violence cannot be tolerated. We must be united as a country to end gun violence, once and for all”
We cannot grow numb to the over 40,000 gun deaths that occur each year in America, nor the fact that gun violence in now the number one killer of children, and has officially been declared a public health crisis by the US Surgeon General.
In the days and weeks that follow this incident, we must not fail to examine the root causes of this incident nor address how easy it is to get a firearm in America.
Gun violence must be a central issue in the upcoming election. Our lives depend on it.
